Teresa Berg’s Five Tips For Better Dog Photography

1. Where’s the light? You want the light to fall on the dog’s face.

2. Declutter the background.

3. Get down on the dog’s eye level.

4. Good dog posture: have a dog sitting up with their ears up.

5. Make sure the dog is making eye contact with the camera.

Great tips but more importantly Photos for Fido is a fantastic organization. I remember hearing about them some time back. So glad they exist. It's incredible what some better photography for shelter dogs can accomplish. And it was the photo of that gorgeous Doxie that initially got my attention when I saw it posted on my Twitter feed.

Uh oh

I came to bed just now to find this little guy on my side of the bed.

He looked so sweet and cozy with no intentions of moving. Until I told him to move and he jumped up and proceeded to throw up on my sleeping husband (thankfully it was mostly water).

Horrible but funny. Husband is now in the shower. These things only happen to him. And he's pretty sure they are intentional.

The great Kimbo & camera breakthrough!

One of the first training challenges we had with our new dog Kimbo was his aversion to cameras. Major problem for me as I love photographing and taking video of my dogs. In the past month we have had some major breakthroughs desensitizing Kimbo to the camera.

My brother had this small dog barking control device or something that they used to use to keep him in line (opposed to consisitent positive reinforcement training) . And of course the device is about the same size and shape of most phones and digital cameras. I found he was even a little afraid of the remote control if picked up and pointed at him. I tried and tried to sneak photos of him but they always blurred as he was running for his life, he was so scared. Finally I just started letting him sniff and lick my phone while I petted him and reassured him with calming words. I did this with my iPhone and other similar objects for several days. So far it is working.

He is no longer terrified of my iPhone though still occasionally suspicious and has no idea that my new iPad is a camera so I've even managed to get some video of him playing with Angel.

Way to go Kimbo! Here's a few early (and nervous) photos of him and a low light shot of him looking right at the camera! We'll make Kimbo a star, yet!
